P3: Remediation

To complete our course work under the remediation, adjustments to the Project 3 times are as follows. There are 3 classes remaining:

Feb 5, Feb 12, Feb 19

Continue to follow the process for completing the Object Narratives over the next three weeks. Classes will be used for check in and consultation to give and get feedback on your work.

The due date has been extended to Feb 26 at 12 noon

Remember to post your process work on your blog and follow these stages towards completion:

1. Expand your written descriptions of your “meaningful objects” by building a story around one, some or all of these objects. Flesh out your descriptions into a script or an outline. You may base your script on your personal event or family history/lore or you may bring in an additional element such as a poem, news item or a piece of prose.
2. Record and edit a voice over narration that is based on the script. This audio track will match the length of the intended video.
3. Concurrently, develop a sequence of visuals in a storyboard using illustration, photo, text, etc.
4. Create an animatic video, that combines both the voice over and storyboard for Feb 12
5. Shoot, capture, record, draw the elements of your video.
6. Edit your material into a rough cut for a critique and feedback for Feb 19
7. Refine your roughcut (as per peer and instructor feedback as well as your own reflection) into a final video ready for submission on Feb 26

Animation Workshop Update

In light of the strike here at York, we had to cancel today’s animation workshop with Tara Donovan and Phil Bonner. However this session will happen at next Tuesday’s section at Sheridan. Student’s from all sections are welcome, just let instructor Franci Duran know in advance if you plan on attending.

P3: Object Narratives

Project 3 is intended to enhance your understanding of the language syntax
of time–based communication and to continue your exploration of the concepts and techniques involved in the integration of images, animation, typography, video and audio. You will produce a 1-2 minute video that expresses a subjective point of view and aims to produce a significant level of emotional engagement with your viewer.

This video will incorporate animation (any kind), type, video, and/or still images, will contain at least one track of audio ( voice-over) but can also include type-based narration. It will be constructed using After Effects as a composting tool in conjunction with Final Cut as the main editing platform.

Process

Creative Brief
Include the following in your blog

1. Title – possible name, working title
2. Overview – description of concept
4. Audience – who is the intended audience and how this will be considered in project?
5. Key Message – what do you want your audience to learn from your work?
6. Content Planning – what content you will include and how will it will be structured?
8. Bibliography – relevant sources used in work
9. Visual/Conceptual References – images and ideas that inspire your concept

Storyboard
You can use this storyboard template or you can construct your own.
Remember that storyboarding is used for planning and need to
communicate the significant frames in your sequence. Be sure to
adequately annotate your frame with the accompanying text.

Specifications
Duration: 1-2minutes
Format: final video is HD or SD; aspect ratio of your choice; colour or
black + white; sound
Other: visuals must contain animation elements; audio component (option to to include voice-over)

Credit information should appear at the end of your work to include:

10 things from your life…

For next class, bring 10 objects from your life. These objects can be things you use, look at, learn from, evoke memory, play with, love, hate, question, etc. If you can’t bring the thing (too big, dangerous, inappropriate), then make a representation of it (photos, sketch)

Look for a variety of things that reflect your existence and help define you as person in the things you do, who you are, what you believe in, where you come from. You should have a story about each object and your relation to it. Post a blog entry describing each object, its story and a visual representation.

P2 Update: Bring Video Sketches

Camera Workshop

Filmaker Mary Daniel will be an inivited guest speaker to conduct a camera workshop. Since we do not have a class next week, Oct 9, this workshop is highly recommended for everyone working towards Project 2.

Two workshops will be held:

TEL Friday Oct 3 at 12:30
Sheridan Tuesday Oct 7 at 1:30

These times coincide with the other sections of 3009, so if you are planning to attend please RSVP York/ Sheridan Course Director Franci Duran.

P2: Academy Leader (20%)

This assignment will further our current knowledge of design for time based media by the introducing narrative development through image capture and editing. While paying close attention to the temporal qualities of pacing and rhythm evident in the academy leader, this assignment will use these established conventions for visual experimentation through a narrative sequence.

The academy leader is used for film and video to provide 10-seconds of counting down before the actual viewing of the program. The last 2 seconds before the program begins should be empty. You usually see the 2-second mark flash for a split second and then go directly to black screen. You must use photo-based images as the video source (still sequences or video footage) not number forms from digital title generators.

Deliverables

1. a DVD version submitted in hard format
2. a page on your individual blog that includes:

video linked to page from You Tube
design statement (no more than 250 words)
credit information

Also post process work to include:

storyboards as images
finalized creative brief
any other annotated sources relevant to understanding your work

Specifications
Duration: 10 seconds for leader sequence not including titling and credits
Content: Numbering of 10 to 3 must be placed precisely in the beginning of each second. Last 2 seconds must not appear.
Audio: Put audio blips for the duration of one frame on the first frame of each identifiable second visual

Credit information should appear at the end of your work to include:

Specifications
Exactly 1 minute in duration with audio. Also include opening titling and closing credits with your name and appropriate credits. Make sure you follow the Creative Commons agreement for your Free Sound Project sounds.

Submission
Output to DVD ready to present at the beginning of next class Oct 1. This DVD will contain your final piece and the 3 exercise files, so make sure you provide DVD buttons and menus as needed.

Also upload a mp4 version to David’s dropbox. Remember to use the correct naming convention.

Also upload a version to Vimeo and post to your blog and write a brief description of the work to explain your concept and formal approach.

Overview
Project One has been based on three in-class exercises intended to provide you with an introduction to frame composition, light, audio, and editing. You will design and produce a one-minute video by adding visuals to the soundscape you produced during exercise 3 (Sound Essay) using the criteria outlined below.

Guidelines and Procedures
Beginning with the soundscape you composed for Sound Essay and develop your theme or a point of view by adding a visual component. Your creative direction will continue to be determined by the choices you made from the noun and verb lists, but you may add an additional verb.

Use still images as your source visual material. These must be original (no stock photos) captured by you or your peers, you may share images with your peers. You may use your work or the techniques from Exercises One and Two or explore working with new still images and audio. You may choose to explore new techniques altogether but they need to be deliberate and show control of the image and sounds.

Ensure the overall structure of your video, your compositional (visual and aural) and editing decisions (your shot/sound placement, transition, effect choices and sequencing) as well as the content of your photographs and sounds formally and conceptually relate to the position you wish to communicate. Pay close attention to graphical (as well as rhythmic, temporal and spatial) editing techniques and to the process of experimentation you have been engaged with throughout the three in-class exercises. Be prepared to discuss your decisions as to every detail of your video.

Concept development: demonstrated understanding of formal and conceptual concerns with regards to video structure – % 30
